Major Characters

Oren Loper

The main protagonist. A sheriff and a Vidder. Oren's a harried sheriff in Hearthback, a small frontier desert town bordering an expanse of desert called the Wastes. He can come off as gruff and has little patience for assholes, but he's a nice enough guy.

Squires

Nessie Squires is Oren's Deputy, sex buddy, and best friend since Authority Academy. She's entirely disorganized and a little ditzy, but she's fairly brave, friendly, and good with a sword and board. A good cop/friend.

Minor Characters

Ferdinand Blejwas, a bent cop from a different city. He and Oren don't really like each other.
The Undertaker, a creature of Dream that helps Oren out every now and then.
Orpheo, a cyclopean mage who doesn't try to blow Oren's face off.
A cyclopean mage who tries to blow Oren's face off.
Sofiya and Joseph, two hitmen. Joseph and Nessie sort of had a thing for a while.
Allen Arbock, a thaumaturge and former CEO inside a serial killer's body.
